Head-to-head comparison

LiveChat vs Tidio

LiveChat vs Tidio for UK small teams: compare agent-seat and conversation pricing, AI allowances, Shopify fit, reporting and the right chat workflow.

A human website-chat operation contrasted with a chat, AI and handoff workflow
Original Support Sorted illustration comparing a staffed chat desk with a chat-and-AI workspace.

LiveChat Starter allows one user; a multi-agent team needs to assess its $49-per-person Team plan.

Tidio Free covers 50 monthly human conversations, while its initial 50 Lyro AI conversations are lifetime, not monthly.

Test the handoff from chat to a durable ticket before deciding either system is a complete help desk.

  • Lyro AI and Flows have separate allowances and charges

  • Optional AI agent

LiveChat and Tidio can put a chat widget on the same website, but their economic and operational centres are different. LiveChat assumes the value lies in skilled people holding timely conversations. Tidio makes it easy to begin with a small human-chat allowance and add a separate AI agent or automated Flows. Neither model is universally cheaper or more effective.

Our verdict: LiveChat for a well-staffed, chat-led service; Tidio for a lower-volume business that wants chat, tickets and controlled AI experimentation in one workspace. This comparison is based on current published plans and product documentation. Prices were checked September 2026.

The lowest published numbers are not equivalent. LiveChat Starter is not a plan for several agents. Tidio's free tier is not unlimited support, and its Lyro allowance does not reset monthly. Model the system a team will actually use, not the number in an advertisement.

The two cost curves

A single person answering fewer than 50 conversations a month can use Tidio Free, subject to the desired feature set. LiveChat requires a paid subscription after the trial. For two agents, the relevant LiveChat reference is Team at $98 per month in total on annual billing; Tidio Starter is $24.17 monthly at its listed 100-conversation entry point, but higher monthly volume changes the package price.

That does not make Tidio the default winner. A three-person team handling a steady stream of short pre-sales chats may find a seat model easier to forecast than moving through conversation bands. Conversely, occasional collaboration among several people with few contacts may suit a volume-led plan. Estimate billable conversations, agents and seasonal spikes separately.

Add AI as a second calculation. Tidio's free Lyro pool is lifetime. Its paid AI quota and Flows reach are separate from human conversations. For LiveChat, identify the precise Text product or third-party tool providing autonomous replies and add its fee. Counting suggested text for agents as though it were a fully automated AI resolution would distort the comparison.

Which chat workflow is better?

LiveChat has a deliberately focused real-time workflow: a person is available, the customer starts a conversation, the team routes it and follows up if necessary. Visitor engagement and reporting help managers place agents at the times and pages that matter. This makes sense for pre-purchase advice, complex product questions and a website where a fast human answer prevents abandonment.

Tidio handles website chats but also has ticketing and email management in the same workspace. Its Shopify-oriented automations can address simple patterns before a person is involved. That is useful when a founder does not want to run separate chat and ticket applications. A combined inbox still needs rules for ownership, after-hours messages and long-running requests.

In either trial, send a message just before closing time. Leave the page, reply from email and return the next day. The strongest workflow is the one that preserves the question, identity and next action without depending on an agent's memory. A beautiful widget is irrelevant if the support team loses the case after the chat ends.

AI and escalation

Tidio has a clearer native path to Lyro AI. That does not mean every question should be sent to it. Start with a limited, approved knowledge set and define escalation for uncertainty, account changes, payment concerns and complaints. Sample conversations for wrong or incomplete claims. Compare repeated contact and customer effort, not merely automated interaction counts.

LiveChat can be paired with its wider product family and integrations for automation and ticket work. The cost and governance differ depending on that pairing. If AI-first service is the main buying reason, compare the full proposed stack with Tidio's full paid Lyro allocation rather than LiveChat alone against Tidio's free demonstration pool.

Handover quality is the decisive criterion. When an AI answer cannot finish a request, can an agent see the visitor's words, the knowledge already offered and the promised next step? Require a test of one correct answer, one ambiguous case, one policy exception and one failed answer. A handover should be visible to both customer and owner.

Ecommerce and Shopify

Both products document Shopify installation routes. Tidio emphasises storefront chat, cart context and commerce-specific Flows. LiveChat offers broad ecommerce integrations and a staffed sales-chat approach. A Shopify logo on an app page does not tell you whether an agent can cancel an order, view returns or see all orders under a customer account.

Trial five tasks with representative store data: sizing advice, delivery estimate, order status, late cancellation and a return. Record context switches and identify which actions remain in Shopify. If in-ticket order operations are central, include Gorgias in the comparison; its specialist help desk is a materially different answer from either chat-first product.

Be cautious with proactive prompts. They can help a shopper who hesitates, but can annoy someone resolving a complaint or finishing payment. Configure page and frequency rules, and review conversion alongside support quality. More initiated chats are not automatically more value.

Reporting and growth

LiveChat Team introduces reporting, with Business providing more staffing-oriented analytics. That suits a manager who needs to measure queue time, missed chats and performance by shift. Tidio's reporting should be checked against its human, AI and automation meters, so finance and operations can reconcile usage with actual customer outcomes.

Neither tool should be selected solely on a dashboard screenshot. Recreate the weekly report the team needs: incoming contacts, resolved in chat, handed to ticket, missed, reopened and approximate cost per useful resolution. If one report omits after-hours demand or mixes bot touches with human replies, it may create a misleading success story.

As the organisation grows, revisit the core model. A company with complex SLAs, multiple specialist queues and phone support may need a broader help desk or omnichannel suite. A chat-first start can be correct now without being the final service architecture.

Who should choose which?

Choose LiveChat when people are the product: agents cover live hours, the website benefits from immediate conversation and you want mature chat management. Account for Team and any HelpDesk companion product if support cases regularly extend beyond the session.

Choose Tidio when you need a low-friction start, want chat and tickets together and can forecast contact volume. Pilot Lyro on well-defined questions, but budget a renewable AI quota rather than treating its first 50 interactions as an ongoing free allowance.

The final decision is a trial outcome. Put each product on the same test page, use the same questions and rota, and measure both customer journey and total cost at normal and peak volume. The winner is the one that makes a truthful service promise the team can keep.

Frequently asked questions

Questions readers ask before choosing

Is Tidio cheaper than LiveChat?

It can be for a low-volume team because Tidio has a permanent 50-human-conversation monthly free allowance. LiveChat starts at $19 per person monthly on annual billing, but its Starter tier permits one user. Costs can reverse when Tidio's conversation volume and AI packages rise.

Does LiveChat include a free plan?

LiveChat publishes a 14-day trial rather than a permanent free plan. Its Starter, Team and Business plans were listed from $19, $49 and $79 per person each month on annual billing in September 2026.

Is Tidio's AI included without a limit?

No. Every account begins with 50 Lyro AI conversations as a one-time lifetime pool. A renewable monthly AI quota requires a paid Lyro allocation, separate from human conversation capacity.

Which product is better for a Shopify store?

Tidio is attractive when chat, ticketing and store-oriented automation belong together. LiveChat suits a store prioritising staffed pre-purchase conversation. Test order visibility, after-hours handling and follow-up before choosing.
