Tidio review

Our Tidio review explains the free conversation limit, paid chat plans, Lyro AI allowance, Shopify use and the real fit for a small support team.

An online shop's questions splitting between an AI assistant and a human support agent
Original Support Sorted illustration of chat, automation and human follow-up for a small shop.

Free customer-service access includes 50 monthly billable conversations; Starter begins at $24.17/month annually for 100.

The first 50 Lyro AI conversations are a lifetime allowance, not an automatic monthly free allotment.

Shopify integration is a meaningful strength, but test the exact order questions and handoff process.

Gorgias

Best for: Online shops that need order context and ecommerce actions inside support conversations

Unlike per-seat tools, Gorgias prices its help desk by billable ticket volume. Its strongest case is the depth of its Shopify and ecommerce workflow integrations.

$10/month for 50 ticketsStarter includes 3 agent seats; checked September 2026

Useful strengths

  • Deep Shopify order context and actions
  • Costs scale by tickets rather than only by agent seats

Watch for

  • Overages and AI resolutions need modelling
  • Entry plan is email-only and has limited operations features
  • 7-day trial
  • Shopify-focused
  • Ticket-volume pricing

Tidio is appealing because a small team can put a conversation box on a website, manage customer replies and experiment with automation without beginning on a large per-agent contract. The product is strongest for a chat-led business that wants one place to handle onsite questions and straightforward tickets. Its pricing becomes less simple as soon as human conversations, AI conversations and automated Flows all matter.

Our verdict is a practical low-volume starting point with a credible ecommerce use case, provided the buyer models each allowance. This review uses Tidio's public pricing, quota and integration documentation. Published details were checked September 2026.

Lyro AIFirst 50 conversations free onceA recurring monthly AI quota requires a paid Lyro package

Tidio describes a billable customer-service conversation as an interaction handled by an operator. Its help page says the monthly quota applies across website chat, connected Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp conversations, and email threads in Tickets. Flows and Lyro have separate limits. A team can therefore run out of human-conversation allowance even if the number of website chats alone looks modest.

The free Lyro allotment is frequently misread. It is an initial lifetime pool of 50 AI conversations. When exhausted, it does not reset the way the free human-chat allowance does. The pricing page offers paid monthly AI allocations; determine the projected AI volume from real questions, not a vendor resolution percentage.

Chat and ticket workflow

Tidio brings live chat and tickets into one support workspace. That suits an operator who wants to answer a product question quickly but also needs to keep a longer case open. During a trial, check whether the same customer identity and relevant context survive a switch from chat to email or another channel. A message in a combined inbox is not necessarily one coherent case.

Define an owner for every unresolved conversation. A chat can end because the visitor leaves the page, not because the request is complete. Decide which chats become tickets, when an agent sends a recap and how a customer returns. Record the difference between a missed real-time contact and a genuinely resolved case in reporting.

If a business already runs formal service levels, multiple specialist queues or complex permission rules, Tidio may not replace a dedicated help desk. Evaluate those needs on the intended plan. For a modest ecommerce or service team, the value is speed of setup and a shared conversation view, not a promise that every advanced support process is present in the entry tier.

Lyro AI: use a narrow knowledge scope first

Lyro can answer customer questions using provided knowledge and can be extended through actions. It is a different buying decision from the base chat workspace. Start with a controlled set of approved answers: opening hours, delivery areas, returns eligibility and product care. Exclude account-specific promises, refunds and unusual disputes until the data, actions and escalation rules are proven.

Good AI evaluation is not just a percentage of conversations labelled resolved. Sample the replies, look for unsupported claims, measure repeat contact, and inspect the cases handed to a human. The agent needs enough context to continue without making the customer explain everything again. A supposedly successful automated answer that causes a second contact is not a genuine saving.

Keep three lines in a budget: customer-service conversation quota, Lyro AI conversation quota, and Flows reach or automation package. If the storefront grows, each can change at a different rate. Tidio's pricing selector is the appropriate place to test a quiet month, a normal month and a promotion peak.

Shopify and other ecommerce use

Tidio offers an official Shopify app. Its documentation explains both installation and activation in the Shopify theme's app embeds. That second step matters: installing an app but leaving the widget disabled is an easy launch mistake. Theme changes may require checking the embed again.

The Shopify proposition includes visitor chat and store-aware features such as cart or order context and promotional Flows. Test with real scenarios: a customer asking whether an item will arrive by Friday, a size change after purchase, an order placed under another email address, and an enquiry about a return. Note exactly what the agent can see and do without leaving Tidio.

Do not count automation templates as outcomes. A generic discount prompt can be distracting or harmful if it triggers during checkout or on a complaint page. Configure targeted pages, frequency limits, opening hours and suppression for customers already in an active support conversation. Compare changed conversion and service outcomes, not just clicks on the widget.

Omnichannel claims need plan-level testing

Tidio lists email, website chat and social-messaging integrations. A multi-channel inbox is useful only if it joins customer context and preserves ownership. Test a person who asks in chat, then sends an Instagram message and replies to an email. Does the team recognise the same person, avoid two agents working separately and preserve the original issue?

Channel providers can impose their own rules and connection requirements, particularly for social and messaging services. Confirm the current plan, account permissions and any external charges. A channel logo on an integration page is a starting point for a test, not proof that the entire customer journey will work on the base subscription.

For a largely email-only team, a conventional help desk may provide clearer categories, service policies and reports. Tidio becomes more attractive when website chat is central and support operations are still relatively compact.

Reporting and cost control

At a minimum, a Tidio team should watch incoming volume, billable human conversations, missed chats, AI interactions, handoffs and repeat contact. Set a quota warning before the month ends. When evaluating a paid package, model a seasonal peak rather than simply multiplying last week's traffic by four.

Try a test cohort of common questions and inspect whether an AI handoff consumes a human conversation allocation under the relevant billing definitions. Do not assume the two usage meters can be added or substituted. Keep screenshots or exports of the pricing selector used for the decision so the team can revisit assumptions when volume changes.

Limitations, alternatives and verdict

Tidio's chief limitation is the complexity of metered usage once a team grows. A free plan is useful, but 50 human conversations can be exhausted quickly by an active store. AI's free 50 is not a recurring monthly allowance, and the best ecommerce automations can involve another usage line. Buyers must also confirm whether reporting and ticket management are sufficiently mature for their operation.

Choose Tidio if you want to launch chat with a small volume, value a combined ticket view and have credible candidate questions for Lyro. Choose LiveChat if staffed real-time conversation and chat management matter more than bundled AI. Choose Gorgias when agents need deep order context and supported store actions in the ticket workspace. Choose Zendesk or Freshdesk Omni if a broader service operation already spans several channels and groups.

Before committing, run the widget on one product page, connect a non-critical Shopify environment if relevant, simulate a missed chat and a handoff, and calculate costs at three volume levels. Tidio can be a good, accessible starting point; its economics need the same care as a much larger platform.

Put this product into your cost model

Lyro's initial lifetime allowance must not be confused with a repeating monthly entitlement. The AI usage ledger separates trial units, paid usage and accepted outcomes; use it alongside the free-plan trigger checklist before assuming ongoing automation is free.

Frequently asked questions

Questions readers ask before choosing

Is Tidio free for live chat?

Tidio offers a permanent free customer-service plan with 50 monthly billable human conversations. The limit covers supported live chat, email tickets and connected messages that agents handle, not an unlimited volume of human support.

Are Tidio's 50 free Lyro conversations monthly?

No. The initial 50 Lyro AI conversations are a one-time lifetime allowance. A paid Lyro allocation is needed for a renewable monthly quota. This is separate from the human-conversation allowance.

Does Tidio include a help desk?

Tidio includes ticketing and email-management features alongside chat. Whether it replaces a more structured help desk depends on queue complexity, reporting, service targets and how much support happens outside the website.

Is Tidio good for Shopify?

Tidio has an official Shopify app and shop-specific features. It is well worth trialling for pre-purchase chat and common order questions, while stores needing deep in-ticket order actions should also compare Gorgias.
