Zendesk and alternative routes
Zendesk is the subject of this setup guide. Compare the total plan and app requirements with ecommerce-specialist Gorgias and Freshdesk before choosing a platform for one connector.
Zendesk

Zendesk's official Shopify integration brings recent customer and order details into the Support agent workspace. It can also expose refund and cancellation actions, and its setup flow can place a Web Widget on the store. Those functions sound like one installation, but they are separate operational choices. A store may want order context without letting every support agent change an order or adding live chat to the storefront.
Before beginning, read Zendesk's current setup article. It contains a material prerequisite: Support customers must also have Chat for this integration. The Marketplace listing alone does not make the total account requirement obvious. Check plan availability and account permissions before promising a team that the connection is included.
1. Define the use case and prerequisite
Write down why agents need the Shopify data: order lookup, delivery status, returns, cancellations or reporting. Check which of those actions the official integration actually supports. Zendesk's Marketplace page says the app queries Shopify for customer details and recent orders and can let agents process refunds and cancellations from the Support sidebar. It does not mean every commerce action is available or every refund is safe.
Confirm administrator rights in both systems and whether the required Zendesk Chat entitlement is active. Decide which store or stores to connect. If you have several storefronts, define a store naming rule and a method for agents to distinguish order IDs. If a marketplace channel also feeds Shopify, check the original sales channel before promising a direct-store remedy.
2. Install the official app deliberately
Zendesk's Marketplace describes installing the official app, selecting the Zendesk subdomain, connecting the Shopify storefront and configuring sidebar apps, Web Widget and Sunshine features in Admin Center. The detailed help article gives the current screen sequence. Follow that live article as the step-by-step authority; interface labels may change after this page is published.
Review the Shopify permissions requested. Only an authorised administrator should accept a connection that can read customer information or perform order actions. Record who installed it, which account owns it and how it can be disconnected. If your organisation uses a test store, connect that first to verify the integration without touching live customer orders.
3. Configure what agents see
Start with order context. Zendesk says the sidebar can show customer and order information without leaving the ticket, and it adds Shopify order ID ticket fields after setup. Open a ticket for a known order and confirm that the customer, order, items, fulfilment and store are correct. Open the order from the sidebar and compare it with Shopify. Repeat after changing an order in Shopify to see how quickly the ticket reflects the update.
Test the awkward cases: guest checkout, an email address used on multiple orders, a customer who changed their email, partial fulfilment, two storefronts with similar order numbers, and a gift recipient contacting support. A sidebar suggestion is not proof of identity. Agents should have a documented way to verify the right order before disclosing personal details.
4. Decide separately on chat and order-changing rights
The account may need Chat for the integration, but that does not require you to display a live-chat widget to shoppers. If you do add the Zendesk Web Widget to Shopify, set staffing hours, expected response and handoff rules before launch. See our live-chat installation guide for that customer-facing decision.
Zendesk's setup lets an administrator enable refunds and cancellations in the Support sidebar. Keep those off until the store has a refund policy, role restrictions and a review process. Test a cancelled unfulfilled order and a partial refund with controlled orders, checking tax, shipping, quantity, notifications and the final Shopify record. Record which agent acted and why. An integration should never bypass a warehouse inspection or an approval threshold simply because it shortens the click path.
5. Test failure and ongoing maintenance
Disconnect or restrict the test connection and check whether agents see a clear error rather than stale order data. Verify what happens to open tickets if the app is disabled. Review multiple-store access and any custom fields that appear in ticket forms or reports. Document who updates the app when Shopify or Zendesk changes its integration. Re-run a small acceptance test after permission, store, fulfilment or support-plan changes.
Zendesk is a strong option when the broader service operation needs its routing, channels and reporting. For a small store, the real decision is whether that wider platform and its Chat prerequisite are justified by the work. Compare the same orders in Freshdesk and Gorgias, then price the whole workflow rather than the app listing alone.

Frequently asked questions
Questions readers ask before choosing
Does Zendesk Support alone include the Shopify integration?
Zendesk's current setup article says Support customers must also have Chat to use its Shopify integration for Support and Chat. Check your account and current plan before assuming the Marketplace app will work.
Can Zendesk agents refund Shopify orders from a ticket?
The official integration can expose refunds and cancellations in the Support sidebar when enabled. Restrict that setting to an authorised workflow and verify the outcome in Shopify.
Can one Zendesk account connect several Shopify stores?
Zendesk documents multiple storefront connections. Test store labels and duplicate order numbers so agents do not act on the wrong storefront.
Is adding the Zendesk widget to Shopify required for order context?
Zendesk's setup describes sidebar apps and an optional storefront Web Widget. Decide separately whether you want onsite chat; do not add a customer-facing widget merely to display order data to agents.
